Koma women of Nigeria and Cameroon do not put on clothes rather they wear leaves
Location
The Koma people are a hill-dwelling ethnic group in northern Adamawa’s Atlantika Mountains, which borders southern Cameroun.
This Hill people live in the south and southwest of these mountains, with many on the Cameroun side.
Koma tribe would never trade their beliefs, culture and tradition for anything, not even money.
Exactly the reason why they are cut off from the rest of the Nigerian societies in terms of modern civilization
Population
They have a population of around 50,000 people on average. mountains in Cameroon have 21 Koma communities, while the Nigerian side has 17 villages. about 400 people per village
They are divided into three main groups: the hill-dwelling Beya and Ndamti, the Vomni and the Verre lowlanders,
The Koma have their own language, known as Koma, with an estimated 61,000 speakers.
The occupation of the Koma people is farming, hunting and gathering.
Dressing pattern
The Alantika are passionate about maintaining their traditional culture.
Men wear men’s loincloths and animal skin, while women wear fresh leaves with many children butt-naked.. significantly, Koma males are more open to wearing modern clothing than Koma women.
Hospitality
A Koma man may share his wife with friends, especially visitors, as a sign of acceptance and friendship. to them, it is the best way to make you feel welcomed
Traditional belief
Twins are regarded as evil by the Koma people because they feel twins are harbingers of bad omen and should not be left to live
To avoid such horrors, they bury the twins alive with the woman who had the misfortune of bearing them.
Sources of attraction
There is beautiful hanging mountainous scenery with valleys that regulate the weather condition.
Koma Hill is a tranquil haven filled with natural beauty, these people are surrounded by mountains as many of them live in caves.
Rituals
male and female undergo puberty rituals that involve circumcision for boys and extraction of teeth for girls. these rituals take place between eleven to fourteen years of age
The males, go through male circumcision. which is done openly by Kene-Mari to the admiration of others who draws strength from his courage to withstand such horrendous pain
The female will have their incisor pulled out, and are made to show a lack of fear during the removal of the upper incisors.
These are to prepare them for marriage and to show a sign of maturity.
Inheritance
In many other Nigerian or African cultures, when a man dies, his sons inherited his properties, but the same is not the case among the Koma people.
When a Koma man dies, his eldest living brother inherits all of his properties. The deceased’s wives and children will be under the supervision of the deceased’s brother.
The first son only has Bows and arrows, for example, as an inheritance.
The woman, on the other hand, is under no obligation to marry. and if she remarries, the children become the property of the new spouse.
Why Koma women are not expected to wear cloth
The residents of Koma believe that if women wear garments, they will incur the wrath of the gods, which could result in death or barrenness.
Good news
A lot has been going on in this settlement, Evangelists visit the hilltop settlements once in a while to preach to them,
which gave rise to an increase in the number of churches in their new settlement
Islamic organizations are not excluded from soul-winning strategies, as they have camps in Koma where they try hard to convert as many people as possible.
Thus, the number of twins killed by the Koma people has decreased dramatically in recent years. due to the introduction of Christianity and Islam
Those who accepted modern civilization moved down to the plain land, where they now have a new settlement
Those who prefer to maintain the Stone Age lifestyle remain in their cave-like settlements on the mountains and are still walking around naked.
What do you think about these people and their culture?
