In a seemingly unprecedented move that has continued to confound political watchers in the country, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Igbo-Eze south local government area of Enugu state recorded an almost impossible feat by welcoming almost an entire community into their fold in a recent ceremony held at the council headquarters penultimate week.

The event which was meant to welcome defectors and new members into the APC fold, featured the entrance of heavyweights including a former career diplomat, Ambassador Chief Ejike Eze from Ibagwa Aka, Hon. Ayogu Eze from Itchi and Hon. Lucky Idoko from Unadu communities. Witnessing the epoch making event was the State Caretaker Committee chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, Sen. Jonathan Zwingina, the Chairman of APC Registration and Revalidation Committee in Enugu State, APC BOT member Rtd. General JOJ Okoloagu, former Speaker Enugu house of assembly Rt. Hon. Eugene Odoh, party chieftain Chief Barr. Okey Ezea, APC National Director Research and Strategy Barr. Ifeanyi Ugwoke, Nollywood legend and politician Dr. Kenneth Okonkwo and a leading Enugu state governorship contender, Barrister George Ogara.

Amidst a mammoth crowd from all the 16 wards that make up the local government, Dr. Nwoye expressed his surprise and delight at the huge turnout in a local government that hitherto played very little role for the party in recent times. While praising the party leaders and members in the local government for the impressive turnaround of new and existing members of the APC, Dr. Nwoye expressed the gratitude of the party to Barrister George Ogara, whose support has been propelling the party in the local and state levels, for his doggedness and belief in the ideals of the party. His words: “The volume of turnout today underscores the popularity of APC in this local government, in an event that is not even a political campaign”.

While welcoming the new members and decampees into the party, the APC LGA caretaker committee chairman Chief Mathias Ugwuanyi, admonished them to imbide the unique traits of APC that sets it apart from the parties they are coming from, like grassroots development, community responsibility, economic development and above all, loyalty to party constitution. Describing the entrance of Ambassador Ejike Eze as a ‘scoop’, the chairman also praised the decampees, especially from PDP to see APC as the final destination of their quest for political relevance in Enugu state.

In a rather dramatic fashion, it was also observed that Barrister George Ogara had led practically every politician from his home town of Unadu, to pledge loyalty to the APC course. While defending their decision to pitch their tent with APC, one of the decampees from Unadu, Hon. Lucky Idoko, a one-time councillor and Executive assistant to the Local government chairman of the Igbo Eze south under the PDP, described their decision to decamp to APC, as a direct effect of having a community developer and emancipator in the mould of George Ogara, as the determining factor.

“Majority of our community leaders have been in PDP since 1999, yet we have never enjoyed dividends of democracy – no roads, ill-equipped schools, dirty and unkempt markets, and huge unemployment among the youths. But as a private individual, Barrister Ogara has been providing such amenities for the community without the help of government, so we felt his call to join APC will bring better life for our people”, Idoko said.

In their responses, the organizers of the event Hon. Uthman Uba Onah and Ejiofor Agada, expressed their excitement at the level of positive response exhibited by the people of the local government to welcome the party. According to Uba Onah, “today’s mammoth turnout is a continuation of the huge followership APC has been enjoying in this Local government since the new year, and we are sure it’ll continue in the current registration and re-validation exercise currently ongoing in the local government”.

On his part, Ejiofor Agada, who also doubles as the the DG and coordinator of the GOT Organization, explained that the outcome of the events and activities of the party in the LGA of recent, has been a direct  impact of the new strategies being introduced by the directorate of research and strategy of the party at the national level. His words: “we are lucky to have the director research and strategy Barr. Barth Ifeanyi Ugwoke in our midst, as his plans and directions has been helping us to reposition our party at the Ward, local government and state levels”.

For a political party that parades heavyweights from all levels of government in Enugu state, the APC has ironically failed to win a single elective seat in a state predominantly considered under the grasps of the PDP. But the organizers of this event, which is being replicated across the state, believes that the new approach of selling their party agenda to the grassroots, and maintaining peace is the best strategy to achieving success at the polls.
