A controversial yet intriguing drama is currently playing out in Court in faraway United states of America, between a former aide to the current Governor of Enugu state and estranged wife to the son of the late Chief C.C Onoh (former Governor of Old Anambra state), Mr. Gabriel Onoh (GB) over Child Support obligations. Ordinarily when one hears of Child support legal obligations, it is often assumed that its usually the man that’ll be held accountable, but in a weird twist, this case is on the obligations of the woman, Joy Onoh, in child support default.
In a statement credited to Mr. GB Onoh, a two-time commissioner and former Mayor of Enugu Municipal and a widely traveled businessman and retired pilot, he alleged that his estranged wife and mother of his two children, had abandoned him and their children in 2018 in an apparent elopement with a younger man, to the US, leaving her family in Nigeria. “This came about after she left the employment of the Enugu state government over some minor disagreements in 2018, he said, “next thing we know, she fled to the United States since then till now”. According to GB Onoh, all efforts to get his wife to come back to Nigeria had proved abortive as it was evident her decision to abandon her family was premeditated.
To compound the matter, the said Joy Onoh deliberately absconded to the US knowing fully well, that as a parent, her presence was needed to renew the US passports of her two children. This forced Mr. Onoh in 2018 to seek legal appointment on behalf of his children for the appointment of a ‘Next friend’ to apply and or re-apply for the revalidation of the Applicants’ International passport until they attain the age of 16yrs, in the High Court of Enugu State of Nigeria on thursday the 19th of March 2020.
Mrs. Joy Chinenye Onoh (nee Ugwu) who also hails from Enugu state, had been married to the first son of Chief C.C Onoh and elder brother to Ambassador Chief Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu, for almost 10yrs until issues crept into their marriage recently. Based on the information supplied by GB Onoh, the couple had moved to his Carson city residence, under the Los Angeles County in California US where his two children were born. Upon their return to Nigeria due to work and business exigencies, his wife was given an appointment as Executive Assistant to the Governor of Enugu state and subsequently a Senior Administrative Officer in Parklane Hospital Enugu. Though not a US citizen, Mrs. Joy Onoh had obtained a legal residence status in Los Angeles county through marriage to Chief GB Onoh who, along with his two children, is a US citizen.
Citing court documents that awarded judgement in favour of Mrs Onoh to pay child support to the children she abandoned, GB Onoh expressed perplexion over the inability of his wife to abide by the decision of the court in a matter between her and the Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) Los Angeles county. According to him, “instead of her to pay the amount instituted by the court which is $1532 per month from October 2020, she has gone ahead to engage a high priced divorce lawyer in Beverly Hills California, The Law Offices of MavEryck Langford Stevenson, to object to the jurisdiction of the Los Angeles county to entertain the suit”.
A quick online search about the law firm shows that it is among the top 20 divorce specialists in the state of California with a princely charge averaging $10,000 to $15,000 dollars. The question then is: how is Mrs. Joy Onoh able to pay such an expensive legal representation but not able to pay child support of less than 15% of her lawyer’s fees? In a bid to answer such a question, it was ascertained that in text message communications between the estranged couple before now, Joy Onoh had claimed to be unemployed in the US, though established by the authorities to be co-cohabiting with a young man named Kingsley Akubundu Okoro, presumably in the Houston Area of Texas, also in the US.
In the words of GB Onoh, “what one wonders now is, for someone without a known source of income in the US, and who is unable to pay a court ordered child support of less than $2000, where then is the cash to hire a high-priced lawyer coming from? Is there someone using her to destabilize my family? To what end?”
When contacted for her reaction to the allegations against her, Mrs Joy Onoh,whose US number is still listed as resident in Houston Texas, sent a reply thus: “Please don’t contact my number again. Speak with my lawyer (Barrister Chijioke) and he will tell everything (sic). Thanks”. All efforts to get the response of the said Barrister Chijioke on his mobile (08033867477), proved abortive up till this publication. However, considering how weighty and serious Child support default is in the US, various sanctions might playout for the defaulter ranging from loss of privileges and even jail time, and outright expulsion for non-citizens.
